I remember fragments of being a young child. It is very strange the things that stick in your mind. Nothing even really special. I do not remember anything as a baby though. I picture our minds as a parking garage. As it fills up some cars go and others come in. Some just hang for the duration. I find the busier I am the more things I tend to forget. But it is still interesting how those early childhood memories hang on. I hope that my children hang onto the good memories and not the bad.

The human brain, though complex, does have a limit on information that we can retain. So is such, infancy. The human brain developes at the stages of birth, and continues for a few years. during this time, the brain is not capable of retaining any information past survival skills, such as eating, sleeping, and communication - Weither through body movements or noise.
During this time, this is what the mind retains, the simple things, and becoming adjusted to the new world. Later in life, you develope more, you learn, and experiance more, and considering that infancy is a very small part of life, the brain "Forgets", and removes the memory from the mind, and focuses on new information. As the brain grows, along with the person, the more capable it is to retain information, and can hold more, I hope this explains your question.

I remember back to when I was about 1 1/2 years old. The memories are fragmented, but I recall some moments when I was a baby.

I remember watching people waving at me when I was a baby and I thought that was a spectacular thing to be able to do. I soon discovered my own hands and finally figured out how to wave. I was very happy with myself. That's why, even today, when I see a baby, I always wave with my fingers. Babies will almost always be completely absorbed watching that and pretty soon their fingers will start to wave. Weird.

Maybe our memory circuits weren't developed enough to remember details at that time.
