Here are some techniques I have used:

1. Read them over a few times and really try to understand the meaning of each line and your interaction with the other actors.

2. Use your imagination to help you picture what you are talking about.

3. Write the lines down by hand a few times.

4. Say them out loud with a number of different vocal inflections.

5. Rather than spending a huge chunk of time trying to memorize, spend 10 minutes learning them several times in the day.

6. Make a tape recording of them and listen to them when you are doing other things.

7. After you know them fairly well, have a friend help you.

8. Also, after you know them fairly well, write a line down while covering it with a 3x5 card and then uncover it. If you made a mistake write it out again.

The guy who is playing the male role opposite me has never been in a play before and we're doing shakespere. So if he can do it, so can you. Take it 4 lines at a time (fewer is fine, but it takes longer) say those 4 lines over and over again. If their is a paritcular line you can't get right, say it 20 times. Put the script down and say the 4 lines 10 times, if you mess up then start the 10 times all over again. Then go to the next set of 4 lines and do the same thing. After the 10 times, Say the whole thing 10 times without messing up. It works best if you have someone helping you, but it really helped me and my "lover" with our huge speeches.

Read the script through a few times... then start to memorize it line by line. Do something while you are memorizing it.... walk... do yardwork... wash the dishes... wax the car... and continue to recite your lines.

Me... I like to lay on the couch, or sit in a rocker on the front porch, quietly memorzing my lines... then I get in my car, and recite them as I drive... I've got my script as a backup in my lap, or on the console next to me... but I've got the lines memorized, and now I'm bringing them to life as I drive. That.... or I take a copy of the script out into the garage, and tack it up over my workbench... and I work on it while I clean up the garage. Your mind is busy memorizing, while your hands are busy cleaning... and you've got plenty of distractions... where should I put this? Is this worth hanging on to, or should I throw it away? Dammit.... what was that line again? Where the hell is my broom? A nice clean garage, and a well memorized script, all in an afternoons time.

a little at a time. i usually read a few lines over and over several times til i think i know it, then cover the page or close my eyes and say it out loud to see if i got it. also don't forget to memorize the last line of the person speaking just before you; this is your cue to start your lines

just take a deep breath and relax. what i've done for my part in my drama class's play is read the whole script a few times over in my spare time. then during rehearsl i've just paid super good attention to my q's and other's lines. from that, i know the whole play, everyone's lines, and mine. but if your cramming to memorize take it line by line and read it over out loud and write each sentece at least twice.

good luck!

its like a duet, to me. On a song that has two people singing, do you only remember the males part. No ofcourse not if you like it your remember the whole thing. Memorize everyones lines, there fore you know your lines to the beat.

practice!! the more you practice then the more your going to remember. also if you know the story and you know what is suppose to happen next it will help you. think about what your character would say next. there's a difference:
"wow i would love to go for a ride!" or
"sure I'll for a ride, if i have to."

by the way tell what play your in by answering my question. click on me.
