Who got dressed up for battle in WW11, he fought the battle but the enemy he was to fight did not show?

I'LL give you a hint he was the head of the American Tank Division in Africa.

I am not answering my own question. Just trying to see how many of those situations happened I only know of one. There has to be more times than that in battle that someone either ran away from a fight or got killed before they met who they were after.
