About every 10 years.

And use a good quality pleated filter, not those cheap blue fiberglass ones.

Once a year. Check with your oil company to see if they have a service contract. They are well worth it. They include a free yearly cleaning and replace anything that goes wrong with you furnace including parts and labor for free. Cleaning your furnace yearly helps keep the cost of heating bills down because your furnace will run more efficiently.

To maintain eafficiency, have it cleaned and checked yearly, preferably early in the fall. The duct work is most likely dirty from the fuel oil also. Hve them cleaned, Use a good pleated filter and change it monthly during the heating season.

Stop pushing the red button! If its not firing all you are doing is filling the furnace with oil. Oil furnaces are dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. Best to call someone.
