Burning CDs is a very sentive task. One should have the computer kept extremenly clean and it is always best to burn right after rebooting and never use any other programs at the same time.
You should do a disk cleanup everyday and defrag two or three times a week if the computer is used moderately. Try this.
You may need to do a Disk Cleanup..and be sure you have all the boxes checked....
Defrafg your C drive or what ever is your
main harddrive... Make sure you have selected the C Drive.... This is called a Disk Defragmenter...
Go to : Start...
programs..
accessories...
system tools..
Do this often...
Try the System Restore which takes you back to a time when your computer was working good. Go To:
start
programs
accessories
systems tools
system restore
This process is completely reversable. And does not remove your personal files. Just go back one checkpoint at a time until your puter is working good again.

Defragging is not your problem. Yes, we have so many files in our computers all getting mixed up together and we need defrag to put them all back where they belong and should be done at least once a week. However, by what you've said, it sounds to me like you might be having problems with a driver conflict, the ones that are actually running your cd burner properly. In the control panel, Systems folder, Hardware tab, device manager, you'll see your cd burner drive near the top of the list. Click on your burner from the list and go to it's Properties. There you can update it's drivers. If requested, pop in the Windows Installation Cd or Burner Cd that came with your equipment and it will find the proper drivers and refresh your old ones. Afterwards, be sure to restart the computer so that the new changes can take effect. Larry RadioShack 01-9590

Defragmenting won't solve that problem. When you save to the hard drive, it saves things in sectors. As you delete programs over time, the sectors to read things get spread apart. Kind of like putting your food next to you, with your side dish in the other room and your drink upstairs. Defragmenting puts the program files closer together, and frees up HDD(Hard Drive Disk) space. Make sure your computer isn't running Realplayer, and Windows Media player at the same time, because both programs might be trying to do the same action, which would cause problems trying to burn CD's. Also, if nothing else works just try a different program.
Spyware wouldn't affect your ability to burn CD's, it can't. Spyware just causes annoying pop ups, or can check out your personal information such as credit card numbers and such.

right click on your my computer icon. Go down to properties. This will bring up your system properties menu. Select the tab that says hardware. Select device manager. Go to dvd/cd drives. Right click on whichever drive is yours. Select properties. See if that drive is working properly. IF not reinstall the drivers for it. If that doesn't work, Try disk cleanup and disk defrag. Go to start, up to programs, then to accecsories, then disk cleanup. Run that and let it finish. Then repeat steps but instead of choosing disk cleanup, choose disk defrag. Analyze with disk defrag then run the defrag. If that doesn't work, unistall the drivers for the cd drive, and reinstall them. You should be defragging your computer once a week if you are downloading a lot of music. It keeps your computer more organized and keeps it running fast.

I doubt that the problem is with a need to defragment the drive.
Many newer burner softwares, for legal reasons, check the copyright on music and will NOT burn a copyrighted song. They usually give you an error message though.

You may be running out of temporary space on your hard drive to burn the cd's. clean up your hard drive, defrag as others have said and do a disk cleanup.
