I have been happy with Behr latex paint for walls. It is remarkably lacking in odor. I am not sure what sort would be the most durable. I know that Sherwin Williams latex smells for a long time. I get migraines from smells, so odor is really important, since most 'bad" odors and even perfumes make me sick. Home Depot has Behr and it's sold in other places, too.

If the paint is peeling, might as well strip it off. Having used semigloss wall paint it should be easy . Sounds like furniture has some old finish underneath which has to come off & needs to be re primed. Painted quite a few pieces when I had shop. After stripping, basically used auto body prep & paint procedures. Auto spotting putty, primer & paint adhere well to wood & each other Spraycans are fine for DIY prime & paint. Auto paint is very durable. Could also use other primers , lacquers & enamels available in cans. Check cans & websites for child safety. Not much out there that you can brush on & still stand up to use. Edit: Forgot "Melamine' paint used on kitchen cabinets...also tough.Home ctrs will have it Best regards

Most of the better brands are now 100%safe to use(krylon, Rustolium,Dun Edwards ,Bhear, etc.)as long as you use a high gloss,or a semi-gloss, either spray or brush. Those are extremely durable paints for a child's furniture

You can go with a good quality paint in flat finish and then cover it with a clear polyurethane water based finish, which is available in a satin, medium, or gloss finish.
You can also choose a water based latex, also in your choice of finishes. Floor paint can be mixed in your choice of colors and is designed to be extremely durable.
Another finish is the Crayola brand children's paint. I have no experience in how durable it is, but the Crayola brand does claim to be child-durable.
As long as you are painting for your child, you might consider another fun and easy project, which is to paint chalkboard surface on the back of a door, on a square on the wall, or on a piece of plywood that you attach to the wall.
Best of luck, and enjoy your project!

Lowes carries a latex, high gloss in colors. I can't remember the name, but it is in the aisle, where the caulking is. You may think high gloss is too shiny, but that is primarily the only paint to use for durability. Otherwise use oil base, but then you get into VOC issues.

dutch boy has a paint for just this purpose. I have used it on some things I have made for my grandaughter and it has held up extremely well. I believe I purchased it from Menard's and the price is very resonable..

I would suggest using a latex enamel. Because it is durable and it is a water base paint
