Yes he did make a mistake in saying that to the young man. He compounded the initial mistake by saying he didn't know what the word meant. This showed him to be insincere and a bigot,possibly costing him the election.

He had probably heard people with an Indian heritage joking around and never thought to ask what it meant. Why is calling someone a monkey a racist slur? If you call a Hispanic a jackass is that racial? Because they are of color and he's not? Some people wear their color like a chip on their shoulder.
