Let's see. I think that Dells are poorly made, with flaky keyboards and mouse pads. I've see numerous failures in this.

A friend of mine's Gateway just CROAKED last week. It was about two years old. It seemed like a solid machine, but it was DEAD.

A number of my customers have HPs and they work just fine. Several have Compaqs that are fine too.

But my favorite laptop is Toshiba. I highly recommend that you check it out at Costco or Staples, where the return policy is very easy.

Good luck

I have a HP and a DELL and out of the two the HP is a lot better than DELL, i used to have a gateway computer and it only lasted a couple of months. but its your choice.

My company uses Dell laptops exclusively. I've seen a lot of problems with them like motherboards, hard drives, power supplies, and display. Wait, isn't that the whole machine?

dell laptops are very stable, last for a long time, and are generally alot cheaper than the other brands.

i pretty much buy only dell machines and recommend them to everyone i know. being able to choose the components is a bonus.

I think that Dell gives you the best value for your dollar. Their tech support leaves a lot to be desired, but the computer is good.

You are better buying a refurbished IBM.
I got a new HP and my husband got a refurbished IBM, his is lighter, sturdier and works as well as mine only I payed more money for it... Next time I am getting an IBM, some of the new ones are as expensive as the ones named by you.
My advice: do your research before you buy a piece of technology.
