Shake the steering wheel really hard while trying to turn the key at the same time

The question comes up, does your key work both the door and ignition and it works the door cylinder, then it's not the key. I find on most GM vehicles when this happens, the driver does not set the hand/foot brake prior to putting in park (if AT) and the vehicle will have a slight roll causing the shift linkage to go into a bind position causing the ignition key not to turn for restart. What you might try is to set the parking brake, hold down on the regular brake pedal and pull hard left or right on the steering wheel while trying to turn the ignition key. If the front wheel is butting against the curb, make sure the emergency brake is on and jack up the wheel to release the tension on the front wheel. Now try the ignition key to turn.

The lock gets worn from repeatedly placing the key in the ignition. If you made a new key, try the old key again. But if it still can't work, its time for a new ignition switch (not the whole ignition system).

Try turning the steering wheel at the same time. If you can't get the key to turn it's not your starter. If you can't get it to unlock by moving the steering wheel you should probably get someone to tow it to a garage since replacing the whole ignition system would be very expensive and it could just be the ignition itself.

But first try the steering wheel thing, both of my cars do that all the time. My 96 and my 06. It's not unusual.

Good Luck.

The lock cylinder is probably worn, or the key was cut with the wrong code. On many models the ign. key works on the doors, but not vice versa. The reason being there`s an extra code on the ign. cyl. If you dont` have the code in your owners manual; then the cyl will have to be removed/ repl. Its` a little tricky when the key wont turn the lock! By the way; the code is on the lock cyl.

Replace the ignition your key is probably worn down to the point that making a new key will not help at all.

Initial thought--turn the steering wheel. It may take some extra force (not saying enough to break it). but, pull hard in both directions, left and right that usually takes care of the problem.

i own a repair shop, and if its giving that much trouble id just replace the key switch, and be done with it,the tumblers get really worn out and sometimes they just wont work anymore,i usually just replace them and get it over with, its easier that way,and then you don't have to worry about this problem again,,good luck i hope this help,s.
