Robert Ray and Jack Remick - The Weekend Novelist Writes a Mystery (Dell paperback, 1998) ISBN 0440506581
Barbara Norville - Writing the Modern Mystery (Writer's Digest paperback, 1986) ISBN 0898795230
Sue Grafton, editor - Writing Mysteries, 2nd ed. (Writer's Digest paperback, 2002) ISBN 1582971021
I think the last one is the best one to start with. It's a collection of articles by famous mystery writers. It also contains good lists of the best mystery novels to read. If you like detective novels, read Sue Grafton's novels, starting with 'A' Is for Alibi.

If you want to write mysteries your are not alone. There are a lot of books at your library on the subject. Also try writer's market (usually an old copy at the library) available on line for news letters. You can get news letters from writer's digest on line they offer a lot of writer courses as well as how to books. There are a lot of helpful things on line use your computer. I am a published author so I have a little experiance. You need to read good mysteries and write them. Keep on writing no matter what. I have a friend Philip Craig that has a lot of books in the local library. He is a good writer of mysteries. Also there is William Tappley another mystery writer. I like the Cat who series and Agitha Cristy myself. I try to read as much as I can but like everyone else there is a lot to do in the corse of a day. You can join a writers group too they seem to help some people with their writing. I try to set time aside to write each day it seems helps me I wrote about two pages a day on my first novel. You will need an agent after you have a completed manuscript. There are all kinds of agents and you need to be carefull. Don't get excited and take the first one that say's they will help you. Also you can look into self publishing. I like Autherhouse, Booksurge and one I can't think of right off hand. I have always writen just never did anything with it until lately. So start writing those stories, don't ever give up and good luck will find you...Best wishes...R. G. Matthews(Author of The Boy In The Window, High School Knight's, Chain of Events, Everything My Father Never Told Me About Women, The Death Of A Cat, Etc...) P.S. Sorry for any miss spelling as the spell check isn't working on this program...Got to love a computer for writing...

I learn the whole thing and I can revel in all of it to some degree. I am now not principally a "thriller" fan, despite the fact that I did/do revel in a few tv suggests that have been variety of crime-drama-thriller themed. I have a tendency to uncover books of the identical variety are ordinarily less than my minimal requirements for "fine of writing", however every body has one of a kind tastes, and in a pinch I will learn anything is to be had. I am now not certain I have an understanding of what you imply. Do I consider a few mysteries don't have a rationalization? No. I consider that there's continuously a intent for any discovered final result. I don't consider it continuously viable to grasp that intent, and I am comfortable with pronouncing "I do not know" in the ones circumstances. That having been stated; I consider it's valued at making the trouble to *check out* to have an understanding of. Certainly I have continuously observed the trouble to be beneficial of itself.

Anything by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I hear that Dame Agatha Christie and James Patterson are pretty good too.
