From a Guitar teacher.
Seriously all the books and things start out with Standard chords.

People rarely play those.
Real Guitarist play a mix of different types of chords.
And then there are the cheater chords...They aren't perfect but easier in certain circumstances. They would never put those in a book for fear of critic.
Some of the Guitar mags like Guitar World are a second best I guess... At least they try and be true to the songs tambre.
But seriously Guitar lessons are cheap.
Learn how to play something you'll enjoy.
And Working players need a job between gigs!

The question "the best place to learn your guitar chords", indicates he already has the chords and is looking for a comfortable place to learn guitar chords. I used to practise chords and riffs in our stair way because it had such good acoustics, no carpets just hard wood. It made the music sound really good and if your at all sensitive to others criticising, they won't hear you as much. Empty rooms are fine too. It won't gloss over your mistakes either so you'll get the fingering down in time. Keep at it and good luck.

I started with a Mel Bay beginner's chord book. It went over all the basics of tuning, how to properly hold the guitar, etc. After that I used sheet music with chord diagrams above the notes, and now I have an "Incredible Chord Finder" that hits nearly every chord variation there is.

The best books are by an author Bruce Arnold. He has an e-book you can buy off amazon called "The Essentials." This is a great way to start off. It teaches you the two most common scales, and all the basic chords. You can also print the book. Hope this helps. You can also find his books on www.muse-eek.com The other great thing about buying books by Bruce Arnold is that if you have a question about something you are learning, he will answer you if you email him. He helped me find the right books for learning lead when I emailed him and even gave me a practice schedule.
