Time math can be interesting... first, always convert the times to 24 hours:
13:57 - 10:53
Now it's just like math... 13-10 for hours, and 57-53 for minutes
3:04 am or 3 hours and 4 minutes, depending on your frame of reference.
Hope this helps!

a very good way of answering questions about time is to use the 24-hour time scale or populary known as the MILITARY TIME where instead of writing 1 o'clock PM, it is written 1300 H, 2 o'clock = 1400, 3 o'clock = 1500 and so on...
thus, your time problem 1:57 PM can be written as 1357, which will be easier to subtract now.
1357 - 1053 = 304 or 3 hours and 4 minutes.
although unconventional but this alternative probably can help you.
oh, i'm sorry i miised the question! is it 1:57 PM to 10:53 AM?
anyway, you can still use the 24-hour method.
1:57 PM to the following day's 1:57 PM is 24 hours, right?
since we computed 3 hours and 4 minutes from 10:53 AM to 1:53 PM, then we could just subtract 3:04 from 24 hours.
24 Hours can be written as 23:60 - 3:04 = 23:56.
hence, it is 13 hours and 56 minutes from 1:57 PM to 10:53 AM

1:57 is almost 2 PM ( keep the 3 minutes to add later)
2PM to midnight is 10 hours
midnight to 10:53 is 10hours and 53 minutes.
Now add 3 minutes + 10 hours + 10 hours and 53 minutes.
20 hours and 55 minutes
