This is a brilliant thought. Please read the book "The Case for Mars" by Dr Robert Zubrin, PhD. for a nuts and bolts down to earth scientific discussion of what it would take to put men on Mars, and ultimately to turn Mars into an Earthlike planet. It is available on amazon.com and in many local bookstores. I highly recommend it.

You could not breath the atmosphere due to the fact that it is 1% as dense as Earth's (that's 100x less dense) so to you and me it might as well be a vacuum. It's possible if people lived in domes or some kind of enclosed buildings. If you wanted to go outside, you'd have to wear some kind of spacesuit though.

yes however the oxygen in the ice is not sufficient enough for human life and also the atmosphere of mars has to have enough oxygen and other gas for life forms to be able to thrive.

May I answer your question with a question? If Man were to colonize Mars, would we make the same mess of it that we have made of the earth? Could we be responsible enough to create a better world there? I guess my answer is "Should man colonize Mars?"

You thinking is correct but I would cost too much money to be practical with the technology we have today.
