The butterfly goes through 4 stages.

1. An adult butterfly lays an egg.
2. The egg hatches into a caterpillar or larva.
3. The caterpillar forms the chrysalis or pupa.
4. The chrysalis matures into a butterfly.

Unlike many insects, butterflies do not experience a nymph period, but instead go through a pupal stage which lies between the larva and the adult stage

Metamorphosis is the change of forms. Probably the most useful one is the silk worm that eats mulberry leaves and spins a cocoon which we use as silk thread.

Butterflies and moths are needed for pollination of flowers for fruits.
