It depends on what you define as 'sponging.'

It's always struck me that there are those who Want to work, and those who Don't, and that those who don't make life difficult for many of us. So, why not let them trade places?

If that happened, we might then have Two groups of Happy people instead of Two groups of Unhappy people.
No?

My personal situation ~ nearly 3 decades of constant employment (public sector) followed by redundancy ~ followed by university ~ where ill health increased and has since degenerated further.

My ONLY source of income is since '93 has been the Disability Living Allowance, now my wife is a Pensioner.

Whether that is 'sponging' ~ is conjecture ~ after 30 years of nearly FULL employment! ...though I still pay taxes every time I buy petrol etc.

I'd Love to have part-time work that gives me some income and some job satisfaction. I've tried, but given the limitations I have, it's incredibly disheartening and exhausting. And, to a high degree, I figure also that I did put in my time (often working 50-60 hours a week) and this in itself might well have contributed to my present medical state!

Again, whether it's 'sponging' ....is debatable and based on various subjective criteria.

Now Now Freddie, You knew you would get on somebodies goat.

Scotlands resources have been raped by those South of the Border. Oil for one comes form the North Sea, Scotland. Kenny Dalgleish,Graeme Souness, Alex Ferguson etc etc you name a club and I will name you a Scottish hero.

We also enjoy pure water straight from the tap. Television and Telephone invented by Scotland. Penicillin discovered by Scotland. Tarmac for the roads lots of others stuff that the world uses.

So we can sponge of who we like as everybody else in the planet has gained and still do from our intelligence and or resources.

Have a look at the number of Scots in the Army and in the SAS. One of the Doctors who started what is now known as World Wide Web is Scottish.

We even have a Scottish Character on the Simpsons thats the mark we have made on the World. Give me the English Chat now.

OK the McDonalds on X factor are p1sh I will give you that.

Although I am Scottish now living in London I have to agree that the Scottish NHS seems to have a far higher budget than in London. In fact you can get any kind of cancer drug your heart desires and also free eye tests for everone (not to mention free bowel cancer tests ). So the Scots seem to sponge more than everyone else.

sponging? what a load of sh*t ! If you had ever needed to be on benefits you wouldnt be asking this question. It annoys me that people talk so openly about this when they really dont have a clue. The only people who are really sponging are junkies who arent willing to work or contribute to anything! Most single parents dont want to be on benefits but have no choice which is mainly down to dead beat dads(and mums) who walk away from their families.
