On Memorial Day about 7 years ago I was smashed in my back yard. I had all of my friends over as I do every year. On this occasion I was answering someones question and as I was going on and on and on. I backed up and tripped over one of the big cool rocks I had ringing my big deep fire pit. I fell into the fire and would have been very badly burned had not my friends been both strong and alert.

So, today I have a much bigger house and yard. I also have a bigger Memorial Day Party. But now my fire pit is ground level. I roped off a 30 foot diameter circle. I then drew a 10 foot diameter circle in the middle. I left the middle alone, but the outer ring I lined with red brick This keeps my guests feet free from mud around the fire and now it is much more difficult for a drunken fool to fall into a burning ring of fire.

i have one but I didnt buy it it was a gift from my mother when i moved into a house. it is a patio fire place so I don't have to worry about braking any city laws. i used it at parties to keep warm annual Halloween party. Also on cooler nights we will toss a log on once or twice if my husband and I are out side chilling. sometimes we have a few friends over and we will use it. we have roasted marshmallows, we made hot dogs once but that was more of a hassel than what it was worth the grill is easier. lol then we just toss the coals into the fire. helps to start the fire too. lol if it's not windy sometimes we just light it and sit there and enjoy the quite. last year I used it 3 times. it was a busy summer I got married and did a few camping trips and all that. Mainly if i want to chill at a fire I go to my dads as he has large fire pits that are not the patio kind... my dad has a fire every day.

My fire pit is 2 1/2 feet deep and 8 feet across. It is a circle lined with limestone housing rock mortared together, the stone is an off white color. The best part was the rock and mortar was free, as well as the oak wood i burn in it. My daughter worked for a builder, all we had to do was haul the left over materials away as well as the wood.

We made an outdoor fireplace and oven. It sits angled across the corner by the pool area. I made it from smooth river rock.(more like boulders) There are little open storage areas on either side of the actual fire place opening, to fill with firewood, kindling, charcoal, or what ever. A hearth runs across the front. Its 24"high. To add to the look, I installed quarry tile around it. We love it .

I am sure that the "old fashioned" open pit in the back yard is MUCH nicer than mine... Mine is a store purchased pit. It is nice but not as nice and original as the one you described.
