It depends upon the type of relationship you are talking about - if you mean the one between a man and a woman as sexual partners living together (seeing that your Q is in the Marriage & Divorce section), then the first and foremost thing that is required is caring and loving each other. Trust is an important ingridient too.

Trust is the foundation of any relationship. The physical aspects of a relationship are based on trust. Real love is based on trust.

Without trust there is no relationship at all, the motions of the human experience.

No. And that is why cheating often ruins a marriage forever because the trust goes away. The second most important thing, though, is communication. If you communicate well and discuss your needs in life, things go better. Love is also very important.

Yes and no. I think there's nothing more important in a relationship than to have values that are in line with one another. That would contain trust, honesty, and so forth. Some people have values that allow them to be dishonest and not forthcoming. Those people seem to oftentimes have many broken relationships.

No, but there are things that are equal to it. They are respect, responsibilities, actions, love, communication, equality, and support. They are linked together. If for instance communication is lacking, then so does support, equality and the rest with the exception of love. If respect is missing, well you get the picture. Love is about the only thing that can be disconnected from this theory. You can have respect, trust, communication and the rest without love breaking the chain.

I believe first and foremost you have to have sincere love or like for that person and everything else would fall into place. If you build a relationship on lust and not love you don't have a good relationship to begin with so why you trust someone you don't even have a good relationship with.

Trust is right up there.
I'd say for me, I'm looking for a man that I can trust. I believe part of that is that he has the same goals that I have.
