We are 100% better than what we were before 1994, and not half as good as we can be.

Great people, with a brilliant future ahead of us.

I just sepnt 10 days with my whole family - 6 of us. Had a wonderful time.Cape Town and surrounding areas, Knysna, Mabula, Sun City were great fun. And like all places in the World whether, in US or in Europe, u find the good, the bad and the ugly. If u want to see the bad/ugly parts, u will see them but if u want to soak in the great sights and the wonderful people, RSA is a great place.

I am proudly South African and I always will be! I intend to live here for the rest of my life. Crime is what you make of it-if you're one to not realize that there is a hijacker waiting behind the tree then you fall victim-always remain aware and you will not become a victim-I am 21 and have never been a victim of crime directly. I am also a policeman and have seen exactly what goes on. I love this place and I enjoy my life every day! I don't think I'm the only one.

Recently there has been many of these questions here, meaning questions that has nothing to do with travel (come on be honest...) and asked by people who are looking for companions to their political point of view.
Conveniently the asker has the facility to "flag down" those answers he/she doesn't agree with.
Everybody think it's a beautiful country. Everybody think the people who live here are friendly, Almost everybody acknwledges crime is a big problem (although there are those who haven't experienced it firsthand who make naive and insensitive statements such as "crime is what you make of it" and those who deny it, such as our minister of crime and disorder...I mean law and order).
So what you actually want to know are people's political opinion...right?
Judging by your judging of previous answers I'm hesitant to answer, since you don't seem to allow full freedom of speech, Cryptocomp.
Either way...It's a great and beautiful country with (mostly) friendly people who love their country and like outdoor activities and sports. That's what I think of my country, South Africa. Great place.
Now, I hope you don't confuse the concepts "South Africa" and "South African government". Either way, I have a feeling you want an opinion on that bunch too so here it is: They rule by talking, making laws and gestures, but when it comes to rolling up the sleeves and applying the elbow ghries in governing the country, nothing happens. The bad things happening in the country is a direct consequence of bad government - inability and unwillingness to root out crime, racist policies costing the taxpayer and the country's economy billions and resulting in people leaving the country. If a man with a good tertiary education and a family to feed can't get a job because of his skin colour, what is he to do? Is he to tell his three-year-old:" We will not have breakfast, lunch or dinner today, dear, because we love our country and therefore Daddy will not look elsewhere for a job to feed you and your brother and sister."
My question isn't rhetorical, Cryptocomp. Before you decide to also "flag down" my answer, answer it to yourself.
Yes, South Africa is my home and a GREAT AND BEAUTIFUL place. Yes the ANC is busy destroying the great and beautiful place for everybody by what they do and (mostly) don't do.

I'm with Dwali on this one, we are not half as good as we can be.
But lately I have been fearing for the future. Will we lose sight of the light? Will things get worse instead of improving?
Despite all of this I will always love the country of my birth, and I pray that things will only get better in the future (and that Zuma doesn't become President, cause then SA will be a circus, not a country)

The Travel Agent,Heloise, forgot to tell you about the 50 murders a day, a woman raped every 8 minutes, the car jackings, serious assaults, babies raped as a cure for AIDS, armed attacks on Shopping Malls, Cash in Transit heists, the corrupt Government and Police, the morally bankrupt Tourist Industry who are in denial about the crime and will trade foreign currency for life, the beach urchins who beg and rob from anyone on the beaches, the tourist sites that are unsafe to visit because of the crime, the inner decay of all the major Cities etc.etc. South Africa is a filthy toilet compared to what it used to be run by a corrupt Communist regime.

i love it to death, but i love namibia more. it's a gorgeous place. wonderful people. it's got alot of problems though, the government is extremely umm, disorganized. although it's not as bad as some countries, it is corrupt to some extent. SA needs alot of work, but as i said, it's awesome.

I have my own Travel Agency in South Africa. Regardless to all the stuff yu hear and see about SA on TV, SA is the ULTIMATE holiday destination, or even for immigrating...

The weather is fantastic all through the year, and we have so much to see and do, that you'll have to live here for at least 10 years, and just go sightseeing everyday, to MAYBE see it all!

I mean, be serious, where else in the world will you find a country where you can go skiing (on real snow, yes) in the winter, as well as dunesurfing in a desert!? We have rainforests, mountains (and a flat topped one at that!), oceans, savannahs, caves, and best of all: THE CRADLE OF HUMANKIND!!!

And, to top it all off: we are one of the cheapest destinations in the world!

Hope to see you soon!

I think that as inefficiencies and corruption continue to enter the process, and the original leaders & spirit of the populist revolution fade away, SA will slowly slip back to the social, political & economic norms that characterize the balance of the continent.
Understand that I do not want this to happen and am not a doomsayer. I hope that I am wrong.
