when you arrive at the border, you will get a customs sticker on your car that is good for the length of time on your FMT , ie your tourist visa. they usually give you a 30 day visa, but you can ask for one that lasts as long as 6 months. this visa is renewable, in country, just one time. after the first renewal, you need to leave the country and return through customs. you can do this as many times as you like. to avoid this hassle, you can apply for an FM3 ie a residency visa. your car remains in the country legally under any visa, for the length of the visa, but you will need a customs sticker if you have only a tourist visa.
