Sort of true. Perhaps it should read more accurately "Be yourself, and don't care if it is in fashion".

That depends for some people yes, for people like me and my grown children being ourselves is being extreme conformists following our hearts, conscience, and beliefs even if they are different and we are ostracized.
I taught my kids dare to be different...stand up for for the good even if you are the only one and speak out boldly...this isn't always in fashion and sometimes one can be shunned or criticized if they don't go along with the crowd or what is in fashion, but living authentically is the only way to live and be proud of who you are inside as sometimes you are the only one in your corner and on your side, so one learns to build ones self esteem intrinsically and thus isn't so dependent on receiving praise from others and from externals...even though one still appreciates praise they can still love themselves without it.
I say "be your best version of yourself and you will always be proud of your character regardless of if you're in fashion or not."

ABSOLUTELY! BE PROUD OF WHO YOU ARE AND BE TRUE TO YOURSELF, AND YOU CAN'T GO WRONG.
DON'T SPEND A LOT OF TIME WORRYING ABOUT WHAT EVERYONE ELSE THINKS ABOUT YOU. IT'S WHAT YOU THINK OF YOURSELF THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE.
