Hippie, occasionally spelled hippy, refers to a subgroup of the 1960s counterculture that began in the United States, becoming an established social group by 1965 before declining in the 1970s. [1] Hippies, along with the New Left and the civil rights movement, are considered the three dissenting groups of the 1960s counterculture movement.

During the 60s, you were "hip" if you knew what was going on. People were always saying, "yeah, I'm hip to that." When the "enlightened ones" appeared in the 60s scene and kicked off the Summer of Love, they were referred to as "hippies" - those in the know. They were cool, they were hip, they are now defunct. Except I see bell bottoms are coming back in. Thank the hippie generation for those. Before that, everybody wore "pegged" pants (tight around the ankles).

hippie...but also can be hippy
dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.0.1) - Cite This Source
hip‧pie /Ëhɪpi/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[hip-ee] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun
a person, esp. of the late 1960s, who rejected established institutions and values and sought spontaneity, direct personal relations expressing love, and expanded consciousness, often expressed externally in the wearing of casual, folksy clothing and of beads, headbands, used garments, etc.
Also, hippy.
In the acronym finder it says "Helper In Promoting Peaceful Individual Existence" but I think that was something someone made up later... none of the dictionary definitions say it's an acronym

A hippie was a person in the sixties and seventies who was generally against society. They dressed different and had all sorts of causes and supposedly loved rock n roll. They were rebels.

ohhhh, yes there are hippies today!! I know quite a few!
I'm arguably one, although since I'm 21, it's more because of my views and the way I dress. No drugs for me, though.
hehehe...
I asked my mom once, "were you a hippie?"
"well," she looks wistful and nostalgic,"I was a flower child..."
hahaha... cute!
