Well, one problem is its Emachines. I personally don't like them. Ive heard alot of bad things, and ive seen a couple of them in person. Its not the company necessarily, but the parts they use.
Now, it could be a couple things. It could be an update that messed things up. You may have to find and delete it.
It could be you have a spyware/adware or something. But, the only ones that I have ever seen actually shut off your computer. Ive heard of alot of them, but ive only seen those.
Try defrag, scandisk, diskcleanup in the Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools. Diskcleanup you have to open My Computer, right click on the drive, hit properties, hit the TOOLS tab, then hit scandisk it also says error checking.
Try this program, Forceshutdown.
http://www.download.com/Force-Shutdown/3000-2094_4-8369708.html?tag=lst-0-1
It will shut everything down without saying anything. Its like the normal shut down, but theres no prompts that ask you to shut down, or save information or anything, it just does it. Ive also found its quicker then the normal shutdown.
Also, run spyware programs, adware programs, virus programs, etc.
Heres a small list of free ones.
Spybot : SEARCH and destroy. If you find one that is Seek and destroy, DON'T download it, its spyware.
Adware
Avast or AVG. Avast is good but it takes another program to delete it fully, AVG is also good. But I wouldn't run both at the same time, they could counter each other causing problems, nothing major though, just one may freeze.
Yahoo Antispy Toolabar
CCleaner will delete cookies and clear history. It can also check for Registry problems, but only minor ones. Youll have to use something like, Ace Utilities for that. But, if you are unaware of what your doing, I wouldn;t use it. You can really screw things up if you misuse it by deleting something that is a main file.
Also, if you don't have a firewall, use Zonealarm (free version). I dont like Norton or Mcafee, both have problems. Norton likes to take over the registry and slows stuff down. Mcafee likes to ask for money, and its also a registry assimilator. If you pay now, 5 months down the road they ask for your yearly subscription.
Zonealarm is free and it works. But, Zonealarm also has a paid version that has alot more features including Virus and Spyware checkers.
Hope I helped.

It could very well be that a piece of your hardware is dying. Emachines is known for building products bought by the lowest bidder. They last about a year at the most (other brands have been known to last 3 years, though they generally "End Of Life" at 2).
Warranty that thing. Save your data onto data CDs or DVDs, send it the hell back and tell them to fix their problem.

Reboot into safe mode. Download and install AVAST anti virus. Set up a 'boot time' scan. (easy instructions provided with avast). What will happen is when you reboot after installing AVAST, the boot time scan will scan every single program and process BEFORE the virus or rouge program has a chance to start and self protect itself. If you do not want to do this or cannot do this, then the only sure fire way to get rid of whatever it is you are infected with, is to completely wipe your operating system and start over. That also is not as difficult as it sounds. Good luck.

emachines have not had a very good reputation so far.. is there anyway you can exchange it?? otherwise.. if there is a sleep mode on your PC.. I'd suggest instead of shutting down everytime, just put it into sleep mode. takes a much shorter time to wake up from sleep mode than it does to try rebooting and much less aggrevation with the whole not shutting down issue. Good Luck

The problem could arise due to any reason. It is suggested u do the following.
1-Use a registery Cleaner to clean unwanted files in the registry,
2-use a cleaner to clean the ad-ware & mal-ware & spy-ware.
3-Check the START->Program->Startup and see how many files u load during the start.
4-Check how much RAM is available, and how much is unwanted.
Some of the freeware software needed is.
- Easy Cleaner - http://www.toniarts.com
-Regcleaner - www.jv6.org
-RegSeeker - http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
Use them for ur personal use and go through the help option first, to understand properly what they will do.
After using this then do DEFRAGMENTATION.

emachine isnt a very reliable company, so thats 1 problem.
i would say that you would need to update the pc and make sure theres no conflicts with programs (device manager etc..) and perhaps if thats all done do a spyware scan (adaware is good) and also check for any virus's.

Go to ewido.net and do an online scan. It is now AVG but if there is a problem that is one bad scan. it get everything bad.
After that get ccleaner and run scan and then run the issue scan and fix the problem that are found.
and then do a reboot and see if that work.

see if the machine will turn off in "Safe" mode. If not, you've got a problem that may cost you more to fix than you paid for the computer.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
