Their arrogance is astonishing, isn't. Truly, I used to feel quite amiable towards Americans - until I started using this site. Now I can't bloody stand them. WHY can't they click on the little "stars & stripes" at the bottom of the page and bugger off to their own site?

In all fairness, I have seen quite a few British people, as citizens of several other countries, who do this as well. I never blame them for it. Why? Because they are basing their answers off their own life and their own experiences, which is something everyone does at one point or another. Some questions are obvious, unless you ask a question like,"What are the laws concerning marriage(just an example) in Britain?" Other questions are not so obvious to either group, such as "what to do about the immigration problem?" Several countries, including the U.S, seem to be experiencing this problem right now.
Oh, and by the way, I started college classes when I was 16. Could it be, some of us actually have BRAINS!

This site is designated as the US site. And I know that people from other countries do come on this site, but they are in the minority. Hence I generally assume that most people on this site are American because they are. When I want to ask the Brits a question, I go on the United Kingdom site and explain that I am an American and would like some information. All the sites for the various countries are right at the bottom of the page. You just click on them to access. I really don't think Americans are that naive to think that life does not exist outside the US. It is not obvious to a lot of the kids or to people who have not traveled that some of the people on here are Brits. They have no way of knowing that you can be sixteen and in college if you live in Britain. I really don't think it is incredible that we manage to survive.

Gee Jack, a bit testy aren't we??? Yes we Americans are actually aware that you are there. We just don't have the same cultures. We have counties here too. I live in the state of Mississippi, in the city of Laurel, in Jones county. When we say that something varies from state to state that's because it does. It's not a slight to other countries, it's simply the truth. We don't say in other counties, because we have many counties in each state. So, if someone was asking about a difference in laws for example, if I simply said in our county it is illegal for private citizens to "let off" fireworks the person I was talking to would ask what state are you in. It's not dumb to say it varies from state to state. As for the education system, we have an understanding of it here also. My godchild went to school at Westminster prep in Simsbury Connecticut. As for people graduating at 16 and going to college hey great!!! It doesn't make the Brits smarter than others, just different. So, have a happy day in jolly ole and we'll do the same in the good ole USA!!!

The simple answer to your question is, "No, many don't" but by the same token:
What is a homecoming queen?
Why do they say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Happy Christmas" when they are an overtly Christian country?
Why isn't a touch down touched down?
How does the electoral college system work?
What are grits?
Why is a toilet called a bathroom even though there isn't a bath in it?
Oh - and many others which won't come to mind right now.
Seriously - I love my passport and have travelled to at least 20 other countries - in Europe, Asia and America / Canada - and hope to go to Laos / Cambodia / Vietnam next year. Great to learn about other countries and the way they live.
(Don't tell GWB - I went to Cuba and it was fantastic - and I met some law-breaking Americans there who'd sneaked in via Mexico. Advise to all Americans - VISIT CUBA - YOU WILL BE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED!)

When you think of the size of America, you shouldn't be surprised that you get all sorts of people. Some really do live in towns all their lives and only get to know what they are shown on TV.
I think these questions and answer sessions are great. People get the opportunity to learn what is irritating and offensive to people in other cultural backgrounds. I think the Americans will be better off if they choose a more representable person as their president. It doesn't help when he doesn't give a toot about other countries.
By the way, this is a dedicated UK site, check the URL at the top.

I assume that sometimes people have a hard time imagining people
from all over the world being able to talk to each other on the same
site . As for me I don't get out much so my world is even smaller .
I would love to learn more about other cultures though.
So all in all I don't think anyone is saying or doing anything to be disrespectful,
so please don't take it that way .
Of course we all run into nasty people everywhere so you will
probably get some dumb answers .

The Bush administration has presented not something yet shame to the USA of u.s.. that isn't any ask your self maximum different countries hate us, and trust the purely protection they have adverse to the bully Bush is their personal arsenal of nuclear guns of mass destruction. u.s. has tarnished its popularity as a international chief and international peacekeeper; has instruct that it won't be able to be depended on to do the right and moral ingredient; and has re-created itself because the international's maximum recent 'evil empire'. What the Bush administration has wrought may by no potential be able to be repaired. Bush has placed American taxpayers TRILLIONS of money into debt which will take generations to pay off (if we ever can). the united statesA. is now acknowledged as a 'warfare-monger' state lower than no circumstances attracted to peace and humanity, yet purely waiting to serve its personal particular interests - at any value. And if meaning killing 3,000 people contained in the international commerce center, 665,000 Iraqis, or 2,800 U.S. infantrymen, so be it. As our esteemed Secretary of protection, Donald Rumsfeld, once reported, even as requested about the consequences of innocuous victims death contained in the approach warfare, "Stuff takes position!" honestly Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and all 535 individuals of the most evil, wicked, conceited, incompetent, contemptible, grasping, corrupt Congress in U.S. heritage, must be tried in a international tribunal for crimes adverse to humanity, and - if convicted - need to be hanged good which incorporates Saddam Hussein. American everybody is blind-sided by the conservative media which brainwashes them into believing that inspite of the Republican party does is moral, purely, and good. not something may be extra from the reality. -RKO-

Some of us, yes.
I wish that every person in the US could, and would, spend time in other countries, and NOT doing the tourist thing - riding public transportation, talking with and *listening to* other people in other countries.
Perhaps then we'd really understand that most folks in other countries don't want to be us, they want to be themselves. Even in countries where there is need for a great deal of improvement, what they want is improvement *under their control and authority*, and by their own standards.
I'm frequently embarassed by Americans who, with no evidence whatsoever, and no experience of anything but their little podunk town, think that everyone in the world should be just like them.
I apologize for them. They will certainly never have the grace to apologize for themselves.
