They never fix anything in the building because they own 47 buildings. My bathroom ceiling was leaking for six months and I have a Manager who is really weak and timid and doesn't speak English. I pushed for the ceiling to be fixed, they fixed and then hit with a 10% increase. It is such a hassle.

A landlord cannot raise rent because of a child nor after repairing the property. Also, most of Los Angeles County has some type of rent control in place that limits the % of rent increase in a year. Check to see if you are in a rent controlled area.

Anyway, you want to look into California Civil Codes for the reference to what a landlord can and cannot do. For example, raising rent after a repair or a report of a repair is California Civil Code 1942.4(a). The entire civil code is online at:

you didnt say how much you pay before the rise. how was the house before you moved in? how did the ceiling start leaking? what was your aggreement with him before you moved into his house?how is your relationship with the landlord? have you asked to know if you are the only one he increased her house rent.? does his rent vary according to the number of people in a room.? i am a tenant but i want to argue a case for the landlords because we tenants know how to blame landlords even when they are right. is your condition too good or too bad that you have lived in a house that the bathroom ceiling has been leaking for six months or is that you are enjoying some benefits? your answer to this questions will determine if you should push this case forward. please be honest to yourself.

Is your building rent-controlled? In Los Angeles, owners of buildings that fall under rent control can only raise the rent 3% per year.

No, it's not legal - there's only a certain amount each year they are allowed to raise the rent (btw 2% - 6%). Is your building rent controlled - if built before 1975 it maybe.

Sorry, can't site law. Good luck!

Read your lease. Does it restrict the number of children you may have? Then check the california statute for such matters. Good luck.
