I don't have research but I have experience (EFL, not ESL). You've got to be prepared to make it relevant for them. It can be risky when you do "Business English" because the textbook idea of "Business" doesn't necessarily gel with what they do at work. Take it with a grain of salt and try to bring everything back to their own workplace, families and interests. Look for ways to put emphasis on the value they bring to their employer. If it's a regular English course, just keep bringing it back to them. NEVER talk down to them or brag about your own qualifications and experience. If you're a girl, show some cleavage. It'll keep their eyes on you for the whole lesson!
