Well, preferably correct English. What, you, guys, girls. All right?
I'm not sure what ELA means, but I'm going to answer the under the assumption that you're basically talking about a school paper (if I'm wrong, feel free to correct me, but most of my advice is valid for any publication). Stories - well, pretty much everything falls under that rather vague category, so, yes, that would be a good idea.
I'm the editor-in-chief of my high school paper, and we divide our categories into five pages: news, features, opinion, entertainment, and sports. Obviously, you don't have to use this format, but it should give you somewhere to start.
News: What's happening that's relevant to the community you're writing for. These should be straight, factual stories, generally with inverted-pyramid style leads.
Features: These can be a little more innovative. In-depth articles, personality profiles, interviews, and "puff pieces" would go here, as well as stories that aren't specifically current ("evergreen" pieces).
Opinion: Whether you have a house editorial staff or just an op-ed page, it's good to get writers' opinions on a variety of issues, from the local to the national.
Entertainment: Movie and music reviews, etc. Pretty self-explanatory.
Sports: This can either be school or general sports, as well as player profiles.
Hope this has given you some ideas in the right direction. No matter what you choose to write about, the most important thing is that your stories are relevant and well-written. Good luck!
