can i assume you are a kid. Makes a bit of a difference. For example, if you are playing contact hockey or not.
The hardest and most expensive position to play is goalie.
I would say, check out your skating speed versus the other people playing. If you are slower, then you might be better off playing defense. If you are faster and have a good aim, then I guess a forward might be a better choice.

ive been playing hockey for 7 years when you start dont play defense unless you can skate backwards fast start out on either right or left wing(perfurably what handed you are) and if you cant take pain once in a while hockey is not for you. what position is really your decision

To choose offensive or defensive line:
Better wrist shot: Offense
Better slap shot: Defense
Also to consider: Good body weight/mass/checking ability: think defense..or...light and nimble: Offense
If you're up on the line, which wing? Right handed or left? from which side will you be able to scoop the puck off the boards while still facing forward?

depends
defense sits back at blue line ---not very active in offense
right wing sticks to teh right side of the rink left wing to the left
center has full flexibility
this is going by most coaches playing standards

i suggest that you start at a forward spot if you cant skate as well as most kids but if your just as good as everyone else, then do whatever feels right.
