You want to check the Social Security Death Index. Here is a site that might help.

If you know the city or town where the friend lives, you could do a search for newspapers in that city or town, then look in the obituaries. Some newspapers have those listed online.

The SSDI index is good, as the first person said, however it doesn't always show everyone. If the person isn't there, it doesn't guarantee that he/she is still alive.
