it sounds like your email settings have been changed, meaning outlook express (i'm guessing?) can't find the email server now.

you don't say which email service you use, and as i say above i'm guessing you're using outlook express as your email program because you don't specify that either. if you don't use those two and need different instructions you'll have to put 'additional details' to this question and i will edit my post accordingly.

below are the instructions for setting up yahoo email address in outlook express if you ARE using both of those, it should sort your problem just fine:

I agree with Johnny, try resetting your computer to a time before your brother messed with it, and if your email still does not work, it could be that your internet provider is having problems with their email server. You would need to call them. They can also walk you through the steps to check to make sure you have all the correct info entered into your computer to be able to check your email. STMP and POP3 are the incoming and outgoing mail servers. You can check to make sure they are correct (what your internet provider gave you when you first set it up). If you are using Outlook Express, open it, then check it, by clicking on tools, then accounts, then the mail tab. Then highlight your email account and click on properties. Then click on the server tab. Make sure the SMTP and POP3 are set to what they should be and then make sure your email address is below that and your password is correct. It will be in stars so just erase it and put your password to be sure. (making sure you type the correct password exactly, they are case sensitive) Then click ok, shut it all down, Then open the email program again and try it.
Hope this helps you.

There are several ports which connect a computer to the Internet. Each port is responsible for a different type of communication. For example, port 80 is used for the world wide web (www.whateverwebsite.com) while port 110 is used for incoming e-mail. One way to understand it is to think about a multi-lane highway. One lane is for trucks, another for buses and yet another for cars. Same thing goes for the Internet. Port 25 is designated for outgoing mail. In order to send mail, you must use a SMTP (a.k.a. outgoing e-mail) server. If you are using a desktop e-mail client (e.g. Microsoft's Outlook or Outlook Express, Eudora, Thunderbird ... etc.) then you have to instruct your e-mail client on which SMTP server to use. It seems that your brother has messed up those settings. So, your e-mail client doesn't know which SMTP server to be used. SMTP server names are usually in this format smtp..com. For example Google's gmail is "smtp.google.com"
(without the quotation marks). I can walk you through the process of setting up your e-mail client but I need to know which one you are using.

Check your firewall (if any eg. ZoneAlarm).
Your email program may have been blocked from accessing the internet. You can click allow in the firewall program.
Hope this helps.
