A "volume" is a container, and in disk lingo is synonymous with a partition. On a single disk, you may have various volumes or one, or less than one.

In a nutshell, you can think of a volume as a drive letter: you may have various drive letters on one disk, one drive letter on a disk, or a drive letter that spans more than one disk.

Hope this helps!
