uh. hello. Paul Simon?

Soloman Linda wrote it back in the late 1930s in Africa. Titled 'Mbube' meaning 'Lion'. It was a hit, and was quickly shipped OS. Alan Lomax brought it to The Weavers in 1952, who modified it into their song 'Wimoweh' (which is a poor understanding of the original 'uyimbube' meaning "you're a lion"). They credited the group members as being the composers.
Some re-writes happened in the middle and Pete Seeger got all passionate about stealing the song from Linda.
The new lyrics were written by George Weiss, Luigi Creatore, and Hugo Peretti, based very loosely upon the meaning of the original song.
The Tokens covered this new version in 1961, and since then many many people have done covers.

its actually a 1940's song .. and sang by a few but .. hit the world by the tremeloes in the 50's .. the lion sleeps tonight is not the original name and, it was from memory a protest song with differing lyrics
