It probably depends what subject you teach......
Or, if elementary, by sharp attention to their vocabulary changes, their day-to-day skills, and their willingness to absorb information.

I assume by traditional testing you mean pen and paper, question and answer. It would help to know your subject area, but here are some ideas.

- Have them keep a journal that they write or draw in everyday. Tell them that the entires have to involve whatever subject it is you teach (if they are say 5th grade or over). You can review the journals to see where vocabulary and concepts have crept into what they write.

- Have them correct ealier essays/work at mid term or end of the year.

- On Monday pose a question that requires them to combine old information with new. Let students submit answers in a box. On Friday, pick out the ones that are wrong and randomly draw a correct answer. Winner gets candy or to be first in line or whatever.

I base some marking on goal setting and reaching goals. For example in Fitness, I would use the Cooper Run for aerobic fitness improvement and sit ups, push ups and chin ups for strenght improvements.

Test for these areas in September and with some instruction and follow up test again before winter break and record the new time and numbers.

Part of these lessons would also depend on their ability to research and put into use the methods to improve both muscle strenght and heart and lung fitness.
