Not necessarily Famous but in any political or leadership position. Assinations are used to stop a certain action from happening and The American Heritage Dictionary defines Assasinate as: To murder by surprise attack for political reasons.

Assassination:

Murder committed by a perpetrator without the personal provocation of the victim, who is usually a government official.

You don't have to be famous at all to be assassinated.

I think that in order to be assassinated, one needs to be an important figure. For instance, when the Arch Duke was was killed, it was said that he was assinated. But if you are a celebrity, you are said to be murdered. So I would assume, one would have to have a lot of power or be extremely important to the community or a group of people to named, assassinated.

Another example would be Marther Luther King jr.

You don't consider being assassinated the same as being murdered? I don't really see any difference. The person died at the hands of another.

Hey, good question! I believe you have to have some sort of leadership, like a king, president, prime minister, etc.
