Abortion was not a federal crime before Roe vs. Wade, rather it was left to the states to determine. Therefore it could be illegal in Pennsylvania, but legal in New York. Now states can not place an "undue burden" on a woman's right to an abortion.

States decided whether to allow abortion. New York allowed it. 49 states and the District of Columbia did not. Well-to-do women took a long weekend in NYC if they got knocked up and did not want the child.

It was done in private for medical nessesity. It was not a form of birth control or 'family planning'.
It's now known that she lied in the court, and was a willing participant in the sexual act, but was ashamed it was a black man who fathered her child. Roe VS Wade has done much to taint America's view of the black american male. It has been rhetoric for decades of killing innocent babies.

It was illegal. That why abortions used to be done "underground". It was illegal to do one if you were a medical professional and it was illegal to get one.
