Cytotoxicity is the quality of being toxic to cells. Examples of toxic agents are a chemical substance or an immune cell.

Cytotoxicity can be measured by the MTT assay.

Antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) describes the cell-killing ability of certain lymphocytes, which requires the target cell being marked by an antibody. Lymphocyte-mediated cytotoxicity, on the other hand, does not have to be mediated by antibodies; nor does complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC), which is mediated by the complement system.

Three groups of cytotoxic T lymphocytes are distinguished: antigenic (immunized) T lymphocytes, killer cells, and natural killer cells.

CD8 (cluster of differentiation 8) is a glycoprotein which serves as a co-receptor that is expressed on the surface of cytotoxic T cells. CD8 consists of an α and a ß chain, which both resemble an immunoglobulin-like domain that is connected to the membrane by a thin stalk. It is attracted to the α3 portion of the Class I MHC molecule. This affinity keeps the T cell receptor of the cytotoxic T cell and the target cell bound closely together during antigen-specific activation. Cytotoxic T cells with CD8 surface protein are called CD8+ T cells.

Thionins are a family of peptides found solely in higher plants. Typically, a thionin consists of 45-48 amino acid residues. 6-8 of these are cysteine forming 3-4 disulfide bonds. Some thionins have cytotoxic activity and they are therefore interesting in the development of new drugs against cancer with novel action mechanisms. As of yet, no thionin has ever been developed into an anti-cancer drug.

cytotoxic activity needs to be defined in terms of what type of cell the essential oil is toxic against. For example, antibacterial soaps can be cytotoxic against certain bacterial cells but relatively harmless to human skin cells. Hope this helps!

Hey Drfunky! If you go to Pubmed (the medical research search engine - just enter "Entrez Pubmed" in your search engine) you will find many research papers on this subject. When I entered "cytoxoic activity essential oils", 20 papers came up and each of these offers links to many other papers.

Best wishes and good luck.

This expression means that those oils can be lethal for cells,
cyto= cell
toxic= poison
Most of the plant essential oils have this activity, that is the reason why they are used to clean or disinfect. They can kill bacteria and fungi.
