I believe that gerbils need to be bought in pairs, but I'm much more familiar with rats, mice, and hamsters. Hamsters can be tempermental and usually need to be kept alone (unless they've been raised together). But unless you want tons of babies (and I mean tons because you can't always seperate the babies quickly enough), keep them in single sex groups. I've only ever had female rats, but introducing males can be difficult because they can be aggressive and territorial, but the same can be true of females.
Cuddling such a small creature is a dicey subject. Some will be terrified of cuddling just because you're so much bigger. Rodents are also very hyper and tend not to stay in one spot long. Males tend to be less hyper. I have two female rats and one has only ever cuddled with me once and the other doesn't really cuddle, she's skittish and will often sit in one spot though, but this means she's terrified and hiding in mommy's ponytail.
Rodents groom themselves a lot, but they can still smell, especially if don't clean their cage a lot. Cleaning the cage can also be easier if they choose only one spot to use as a toilet, which most will do (at least of the female rats and hamsters I've been around). Then you only have to clean that area daily and clean the rest of the cage weekly or bi-weekly depending on the size of the cage and how much you do spot cleaning. Males also have a stronger smell than females. I know that rats do scent marking with urine, so that adds a little odor to everything. If the gerbil itself smells, get a warm, damp washcloth and rub the little fella with it. My girls generally squeal like I'm killing them anytime I clean them even though I know I'm not hurting them, they just like smelling.

yes, yes, no. I used to breed. They don't stink if you change the cage every week. SAME SEX PAIRS, preferably boys. And chack out the personality before you buy it, some do some don't.
