One the road is a great story about one of America's unsung hero's Neal Cassidy. If you enjoyed On the Road find out more about this cat. Look to Liquid Kool Aid Acid Test. Also the 'First Third' is an autobiography by Cassidy.
As for the other 2 books, Dharma Bums is a fun read, particularly if you have any interest in Buddhism in the west. Cody, i found to be more reflective, but to be honest it was a while ago and i have read a lot of kerouac's work, it blurs. I did have Allen Ginsberg(RIP) sign my copy of Visions of Cody, as he wrote the intro. Pretty awesome.
another recommendation if you find the beats interesting is a book of Kerouac personal letters that penguin put out....one of the best things i have ever read.

My favorite book ever! I read it over and over again. My favorite character is Dean because I find Neal Cassady (the real life Dean) intriguing. I also like Neal's wife Carolyn. In "On the Road," her name is Camille. Carolyn wrote an awesome book called "Off the Road: My Years with Cassady, Kerouac, and Ginsberg." It is a must-read for any Kerouac/Beat generation fan.

I read it last summer. My favourite character is Dean Moriarty because he is mad but I'm afraid I'm not very original on this point. I liked the way Kerouac describes him, it makes him look magic. I also loved the part of the book when Sal met the Mexican girl and lived with her in Mexico. It was lovely.

Yeah, I love his style of writing. I like all the beat generation writers, Kerouac, Ginsberg etc - but my favourite writer has to be William S Burroughs... I read the books over and over again, fantastic stuff. I think I like his stuff even better than Kerouac.

I sooo read this question wrong! I was going to say only a map and only at traffic lights/jams etc!!
The name of a book? No, Never heard of the author either. It would appear that I'm doubly stupid!

Yes, I read it in high school.
I think you have until sophmore year of college to read that (and other works in the "angry runaway" canon, such as Catcher in the Rye.
I think the first few pages are the best. It never quite recaptures its energy later on...
