Now many colleges, and other organizations want to appeal it. Whatever happened to democracy?

My state is Michigan

I meant democracy in the sense that people are trying to over-ride the majority vote of the people of my state

They are trying to appeal it on the grounds that "the people don't actually understand affirmative action"

"g", but you are assuming that correlation means causation, which is definitely wrong

What causes minorities to be paid less? or even women to be paid less?

... well... if a state passed slavery, would you support it...

now, this isn't quite the same... granted, but I don't think it's right, just because the majority wants it either...

the simple fact is... minorities get paid less and hired less when there is no affirmative action in place... affirmative action tries to fix the problem...

is just ignoring the fact that they get paid less a better way to go?

First, kudos to your state.

But, here's a side question. Referendums / propositions / whatever you call them that appear on a statewide ballot do not make laws. Legislatures make laws.

Now, if a legislature passes a bill and the governor signs it, it becomes a law. Any group (typically ACLU and other liberals with hidden agendas) may challenge the constitutionality of the law.

This is democracy at work. I may not like the challenges brought by these groups, but I support the process.

In this case, though, what exactly are the colleges and other organizations trying to appeal? The election results?

I know that is ridiculous. All of the liberals on here, when talking about the Democrat election victory, have stated 'The People Have Spoken' to put conservatives in their place.

However, whenever an issue is passed by the people that is in disagreement with liberals' ideology; they immediately use the courts in an attempt to usurp the peoples' will.

Typical liberal hypocrisy.

Don't worry they tried the same thing in California, and the liberals' appeals failed.

Dragonfly, I don't think Prop 209 has been overturned by the Supreme Court. Prop 209 only deals with the State of California. The case before the Supreme Court a couple of year ago ended in a draw and did not overturn any state initiatives.

Dark angel, I have to disagree with you. Affirmative Action has nothing to do with well qualified candidates, it has to do with increasing "diversity" by any means necessary. Well qualified minority candidates would be protected by the antidiscrimination clause of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Affirmative Action was/is used to admit under qualified candidates into colleges and corporations. There is a big difference.

As much as I hate being the odd one out, I find I am the only one here that thinks differently about Affirmative Action. It was passed to grant special rights to women and minorities, yes, but it has more to do with just "giving someone a job based on their skin color". It was put in place to force owners of businesses and schools to allow well-qualified minorities and women into the workplaces or schools that they manned. Now, while that sounds quite racist, consider this: before that, it didn't matter if you were qualified. They only cared whether or not you were what they liked. It didn't matter your intelligence, they'd only see a "wet-back", a "broad" or a "*****", and would deny you the given position based on that alone. Matter of fact, AA actually helped more women than anything. Take a look at the new California; health programs that were made especially for women were put in jeopardy, same with abuse shelters for women, and so much more. there's more to take into account than race concerning Affirmative Action, remember that.

God Bless.

most of the knowledgeable minorities that i have spoken with locate affirmative action insulting. inspite of the "reported purpose" is, it also brings the "token" minority right into a artwork surroundings even even as they are not powerful to do the interest. This leads to resentments on each and each and every area. the authorities tried to legislate the prejudices of the individuals, ordinary and straightforward, and it isn't operating. There are those minorities who will keep on with for jobs that they recognize they don't look qualified for, through the undeniable fact that company is "lower than-represented". the placement is filled by someone who's by no potential considered an asset, reaffirming the unique prejudice. Then, the minority who's qualified misses the prospect. Affirmative action does not counteract discrimination. It reaffirms the excuses for discrimination, and potential that minorities ought to easily accept a job out of charity, fairly than having earned an section contained in the artwork surroundings. It doesn't aspect the playing field. in truth, it potential that they require particular therapy in holding with their inferior potential, fairly of being given the prospect to compete for a job in holding with qualification. i do not recognize anybody who were given a job by affirmative action that remained satisfied of their position, or who replaced into promoted to a real aspect after being there for a similar time as their co-workers.

California did the same thing about 8 years ago. The Supreme Court overturned the law which basically restated the equal rights legislation from 1964.

Affirmative action is not about democracy.... it is about equality. The fact is that under affirmative action programs, a person can be hired for a job, get into a school, etc. based on the color of their skin, rather their merit.

If you want equality, achieve based on your own merit and have some self-respect because you did it. Stop asking for free handouts.

Affirmative Action is protected by the Federal Government which overrides a State.

Though, I'm hispanic I have to say I find affirmative action racist. Especially the racial quotas that they imposed on colleges, it only hurts minorities because it makes whites think that we aren't good enough to enter college by our own achievements. Colleges want affirmative action because they want to be politically correct and they're not respecting majority rule.

My state did also. And it's right to ban such an unfair practice. Some thought it was a good idea, but after implementing it, most everyone knows it's wrong. Tried it. .. .Didn't Like it ..
