My teacher is very religous and in class she tries to relate everything to the bible and forces us to memorize certain things in the bible.

Should I tell my parents?
Isn't something like this illegal or something?
I really need help because I can't memorize this stuff at all so I am failing the class. =(

If you are in a public school in the USA, your teacher's behavior is completely inappropriate and against code. Please tell a *trusted* adult - hopefully that's your parents. Then, go to your guidance counselor and insist (with the help of your parents) that you get placed with a different teacher.

Quit whining and learn the material already! You would have to do the same if it were a course book material wouldn't you?

So you've got to learn a few things from the Bible - it's not going to harm you. After all, the idea of government and the rule of law have their basis in the Bible.

What you need are some memory tricks. Involve as many of your 5 sense as you can when learning ANY material.

For example, WRITE out what you have to memorize on a small card or sheet of paper. SAY it out loud over and over. it helps if you say what it is first, then say it and then say what it is after.

Example: March 21st (pause) March 21st is the first day of spring (pause) March 21st

Have someone ask you what it is so that you have to ANSWER.

Also you might want to try TEACHING someone else what it is you've leaned. If you know that you have to teach someone else what it is you have to learn, then chances are you will remember the material much better and more easily.

In other words, if you can teach it to someone else - you know it!

Hope this helps

This sounds very weird to me. Why do you say "my religious teacher" when you later say she teaches American Government. Government and religion are different subjects and in studying either they just don't intertwine. Government is government and religion doesn't relate so what you say doesn't make sense. I can't fathom memorizing Biblical verses in a government class. If this is actually happening, ask your principal to come in and monitor the class and show him your assignments. Or, tape some classes and take the evidence to the Principal.

Depends, are you in a public school? If yes then go to your parents, and explain why your failing that particular class. and yes it's illegal, to force the faith down your throat. if she trys to deney it, then get some other people involved, because I doubt your the only one that's failing, I can't memorize a verse and I'm religious! Very religious! Remember your parents are on your side not the teachers'. Good luck

Talk to your parents first!!!

If you don't like her you can complain to your school board and get her fired. It will help if you have proof, i.e. a recording of her teaching the Bible in class. Its illegal to use public schools to promote a religion because of the First Amendment.

If you really don't like her you can probably prosecute the school. There have been a number of successful cases recently.

Either way, you can probably get some sort of exemption for the failing grade.

OMG. Unless you go to "Saint Joseph's Catholic School" you have NO BUSINESS learning Bible Facts in anything but Sunday School (if you choose to go). The next time she has the class memorize something, tell her you are "no longer comfortable doing that, and that your grades shouldn't be based on HER beliefs." Or, personally, I would tell my parents first and make sure they would support me! This way, when they got the call, it wouldn't be a surprise to them. I'm sure people over her know and approve, so when your called to the office, your parents deserve to know what to expect and how to respond BEFORE they get there. In other words, they have the right to be prepared to either chew out the principal or agree with him. Good luck! If your that unhappy, call the local ACLU.

If you're in a public school you should tell your parents and the school! Peoples personal religious beliefs are their own and has no place in the school (unless you're in a religious school).
If the teacher is trying to implement religious studies into the class curriculum, even worse (again, unless it's a religious school or related course).

If you're in a public school, then yes, that is illegal. You might want to talk to your teacher first and see if you can come to some kind of common ground, then probably talk to the principal (maybe with your parents).
I really hate it when people try to force their religious beliefs on me. I hope you can come to a resolution on this.

Either your teacher wants the best from you or she is imposing her religious beliefs on you. It is time to solve the situation amicably with your parents and the school. The teacher should not be affected including yourself. What do your classmates think about this?
