There are many paths toward becoming a diagnostic medical sonographer.

Some people begin at community college, majoring in health sciences, then transfer to a four-year school, or, in some cases, they gain admission directly into a DMS program.

Others major in some type of science (usually biology or chemistry) at a four-year college, and then apply to DMS programs that allow a student to work toward certification.

Still others are already in a medical field (like an RN), and wish to further their careers by becoming certified in DMS.

Perhaps the best route toward this career (in my opinion) is majoring in DMS at a four year college which also offers certification. There are very few schools which offer a program of this sort. In my opinion, among the best are RIT (Rochester Insitute of Technology), the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and Lewis University.

Other schools, like Weber State University and Mountain State University, offer a program for people who have already completed a degree (like the AS or BS) or who are RNs who wish to achieve DMS certification.

Whichever route you choose, please keep in mind that if you attend a 2 year or 4 year school before applying for a DMS certification program, you MUST complete the following:

Anatomy and physiology - 10 semester hours (usually 2 classes with associated labs, or 3 or 4 classes without labs)
College algebra (one or two classes)
Medical terminology (one class)
Computer science (one or two classes)
English and communication (three or four classes)
Introduction to health science (one class)
Physics (one class)
Psychology (one or two classes)
Social science (one or two classes)

I've placed some websites below that you will find very helpful.
Best wishes to you!

You can get an Associate's Degree in Science, but at the Bachelor's level, you will need to choose a more specific major: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Biochemistry, etc. A degree in Diagnostic Sonography is more of a vocational degree, and you should go to a health care professional college for this.

You need to check the universities pre-requisites that are offering MS CS. Some universities do let the students from other backgrounds to enter into Master for Computer science. It depends upon which university you want to apply and what are their admission requirements. I hope there would be not much an issue in pursuing a program for CS after social sciences. Wish you luck !!
