i am switching old switch for a new one.

Cut off power,trip breaker to that switch,remove cover plate.Remove screws and pull old switch out of box.Check wires and remove from old switch and attach to corresponding screws on new one.place back in box and reattach screws and cover plate.It's very basic.

Pretty much like Mike explained, but, I'd add that, after you replace the switch, you wrap electrical tape around the switch so the terminal screw heads can't touch any metal inside the box.

is it on a gfci circuit? just curious...most switches are pretty basic but in a bathroom you may want to make sure if the light is near a sink...
