I'm a teacher, so is my husband. Those candles and coffee mugs, we've received so many we're starting to re-gift them. I know that's not nice to say, but I don't drink coffee, and I have chronic allergies (strong scents from candles make me sneeze) so what am I supposed to do?
Let me tell you the two best gifts we received:
*My husband drinks one can of Coke every day at lunch, and that one student noticed that, so he got him a Coke drinking glass in the classic shape. He uses it all the time.
*I talk all the time about CSI and Stra Trek in my Gr11 Physics class, so that girl found a fridge magnet that says "all I need to know in life I learned from Star Trek". That probably cost her $3.
All I'm saying is, try to go with what your teacher likes outside of school. Personalize your gift, he'll remember you even longer. That girl, even though she graduated four years ago, the magnet is still in my classroom, and I tell her story every chance I get.
And if you still don't know, go with chocolate :-) That's always a winner (unless he has diabetes or something)

I think the first thing you should get is a card with a personal, genuine message in it. Something that the teacher has done to make a positive difference for your child. That'll make it memorable, and the teacher will like that more than any material, expensive gift you can give. If you want to give something more, I would say you should go to a store like Hallmark and find some presents/cards/ornaments they have for teachers. Most stores should have a small section for that. The one I gave to an 8th grade teacher last year is like this: on a small platform, there's a small glass apple, and a pile of books, and a clear sheet of paper kinda that says "To teach is to touch a life forever." That's something that would definitely make any teacher happy, I'm confident. It might not be available where you live though, I live in NJ, USA, but I would definitely reccommend you to check it out and if you can't find that, find something like it because that's what teachers love -- it reminds them that they're making a positive difference.

RE:
Birthday gift for teacher?
For my child's kindergarten teacher. I only want to spend about $10 - $20 on a gift because we've already donated a good chunck of change to contribute to the class gift. I figure teachers already get lots of things like coffee mugs, body lotion/bath sets, etc. Cna anyone give ideas on...

Respect. It's inexpensive and priceless at the same time. You already contribute to the group gift from the class, so maybe just a personal card letting them know you are happy that your child has a great teacher to provide them with knowledge and understanding. Getting another gift may be seen as a play for favoritism for your child and that could be awkward to say the least. If you feel you just must get them something, find out if they have a favorite charity and make a donation in their name.

I like getting Godiva chocolates...even a small box is a treat.
Starbucks gift cards are great too.
I have too many candles and dust catchers and mugs so something consumable is welcome...locally produced salsa, cookies, etc
One time I got a 12 pack of diet coke every month to keep at school and that was convenient and nice!
