because they have been confined for so long i guess so when they get out they arent used to the enviroment and they of course cry because they dont have the feeling of being protected anymore

Ok I'm about to go technical on you sorry. When the baby is inside you there is a whole in the heart because when they are inutro they don't breath. So without going into a big science lesson when the baby cries it causes a pressure that closes the hole immediatly. It also helps clear the lungs.
When the lungs are functioning, the umbilical vessels close, the ductus venosis closes, the hepatic portal vein is open, the foramen ovale closes, the heart is two sided, the cardiac output from the right ventricle (blue blood) goes through the lungs and is oxygenated, the left ventricular output (red blood) goes through the body, the ductus arteriosus closes, the pulmonary arterioles are open, the alveoli are full of air and the child turns from purple to pink. All of this complicated process is coordinated and controlled by the child’s reflexes; it usually happens within three or four minutes of birth. What makes it happen?
All babies are born soaking wet, and on meeting the atmosphere, the skin cools; this triggers two reflexes:
The cold crying reflex - cold, wet diapers produce the same result, crying.
The cold pressor reflex - cold skin raises blood pressure.
In order to cry, the child must first take a deep breath, and an inspiratory "gasp" is often the first sign, triggered by cold, that a child is going to cry or breathe. Contraction of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles increase thoracic volume and create negative intra-thoracic pressure. Once air is in the lungs, another reflex is triggered that relaxes the pulmonary arterioles; this causes an enormous increase in pulmonary blood flow.

Actually , babies cry inside the womb too, you just cant hear them. But this time they are crying because they are entering a new environment- theyve been in a warm snug lil cacoon for almost a year and now into a cold noisy strange place.but hun, doctors dont spank babies like you see on TV anymore

Probably has something to do with the fact that they just traveled from a nice, safe, warm, water-filled womb with their 20 inch head through a 10 cm opening and are breathing in oxygen into their lungs for the first time!

When the babies start to desend through the birth canal their skulls sort of ovarlap so they can fit through the canal, so the softspot is called a fontal which is where the skull ovarlaps. Very complex, But I believe that is why babies first cry, I know I did.(lol)

because they are uncomfortable and scared. Mine stopped once he was swaddled, much like he was in the womb. The doc didn't hit him either, that's just something they do in the movies. If they aren't breathing well, they thump them on the foot and give them oxygen, but that's about it.

Doctors don't "hit" the baby. The baby cries because it is not used to the the new world it has just found itself in. It is bright, and cold, and it has to learn to breath in a moment....I'd be pretty upset too.

Thats to tell you they are alive. If the baby does not cry when it is first born, it could be a very serious problem.
