He folded the painting to have it fit his briefcase. I don't believe he broke the frame. Since he actually owned the painting, he could of arranged for some type of hinged frame as to not damage the Monet. In the film, the painting folded very easily.

Took it out of the frame and it fit into the briefcase lengthwise
