You are right. It is not the hamster, it is the urine and feces that smell. The cage has to be changed constantly. It is a lot of work but if you like them, you won't mind changing their cage.

The hamster do not usually stink. Yes, the cage will stink if you do not maintain it well. That is not a difficult task at all. But if you get especially attached to your animals, you may want to reconsider your choice of pet. I have had a few in my life, and let me tell you, they are cute, cuddly, fuzzy and full of personality, however they usually only live 2-3 years. I have loved every single hamster, but after a while, I could not stand the heartache anymore. But on the upside, they are loads of fun and very sociable with humans.

Hello,
If you keep the cage clean they do not smell, A simple rule of thumb is if you can smell them you have waited to long, not changing the cage leads to ammonia build up and if left like that your piggies can get upper respiratory infections and pneumonia. Some people think that using a litter that also controls odor is no better. Pine Shavings with Chlorophyll and those Cedar shaving can be just a dangerous to your piggy as leaving them in a dirty cage. If you are going to keep a good cage try Yesterdays news, Care fresh or woody pet.

Hamsters themselves don't stink. If their cage is left uncleaned, and they have to sleep in their own poo then they will stink. We have had several for pets and have not had a stinky one.

No they don't stink! They are adorable. If you are a nuturing mommy to your hamster and clean his/her cage you will be just fine. Hey, my kitten's litter box has no other place to be but in my room, and you would never even know it's there. :) get the hamster!!

I've had several hamsters. They don't stink, they have a pleasant fuzzy animal smell, but their cage will if it's not kept clean.

The poop in the cage stinks. If you clean the cage often then you should not have a problem. The hampster itself does not stink.

Hamsters don't stink, but if you don't clean their cage regularly then it will stink from their waste.
