My mother is 90 and is fascinated by the Internet etc. Get your Mum a simple laptop with basic XP home . "Which" do a simple guide to the PC which you can get free by phoning 0800 389 6519. It has everything in it for a beginner in simple format, a bit like the "Windows for Dummies" books. Just remember that because a person is elderly or old, it doesn't mean that they cannot learn something new, in fact, because of their life experience they usually learn something new a lot faster than their children. I think it would be a fantastic gift .

Although you say she will need nothing more (than email and internet), you may well be surprised; she may discover new interests and pastimes whilst using the internet, maybe music, garden design, who knows?
So although you may not need the latest all singing, all dancing system, a medium spec one may be a good idea.
I would suggest you buy a magazine such as PC advisor, which has reviews of the best PC's in various categories.

Usually, Dell has really cheap low-end computers to lure in the customers. I would recommend looking there if you want to buy a new computer. You can get a decent second-hand one too. Also, not buying Windows but using Linux instead does not also save costs, but also protects your mother from 99% of the online threats out there. And it doesn't have to be hard to use, if you set it up right, it can be easier for her then Windows. Look here http://www.knightwise.com/content/view/154/9/ .

Buy it for her and put a big red bow on it! I am a mom and my kids consider me elderly, and have described me as fragile! I can keep in touch with all my brothers and sisters. I can even e-mail my kids and grand kids at 4 o'clock in the morning with out bothering them.My elderly friends and have even learned to IM each other! Write things down for her step by step, [ I am still unable to attach pictures] Be ready to give tech support for the first couple of weeks. She will love it !!

If it is for an elderly I would recommend going through a company like Dell. You can get good deals that have a general range of ability. Usually they are set up for surfing the intranet, pictures, movies etc. Not to mention they have a support group for those of us that are not up to date with the latest tech.

I'd suggest looking for a secondhand Mac. They are FAR more intuitive and user-friendly. She won't need all the bells and whistles and huge memory if all she wants to do is e-mail and surf the Net. Besides, Macs are Linux-based so are incredibly stable; they never crash. And they are virus-proof as well. For an older woman, what could be simpler?

get a mac its very easy to use. a pc will get viruses and youre gonna have to do alot to it. a mac is easy to use right out of the box. and theres no nasty trial software that comes with a mac. email is very easy on a mac and even better than a pc. the internet will run faster too on a mac. mac is also good for music and all types of entertainment. a mac will also run you about 1000 bucks so if thats in your price range its good.

You can buy a New one for about £300 form any main dealer for what your mum wants. You could always do some research on the internet first.
