Why is it that people say they "slept like a baby" when babies wake up every two hours ?!

some babies sleep really good, but a lot don't. out of my 4 kids, only one slept like a baby. better said, sleeps like granpa in his recliner. must have come from people who had babies who slept well. did you know that in the day of hippocrates they placed wine in skins and gave it to the babies who cried!can you believe that! maybe thats where it comes from. please no one do this. this was actually recommended by the doctors of that day, very long ago. whoever made up that saying wasn't talking about most of the babies i know. we hung a sign in our house "baby sleeping..QUIET"!

in my case, i am very very grateful (and lucky) because my 6 month old daughter sleeps for 12 hours without making a sound! she also loves to nap.... so i guess the phrase "sleep like a baby" was inspired by a baby like mine... haha.... She wasn't always like this, though, as a newborn, like you mention, she would sleep about every 3 hours at night (she actually slept a lot during the day) At around 3 months, she started having gas, and would ALWAYS wake up at 12midnight or 1 am.... Bunt now she sleeps great!

I have 3 children, ages 10 years, 3.5 years, and 16 months. The 10 year old didn't sleep through the night until she was 3. The 3.5 year old didn't sleep through the night until she was just 3. The 16 month old STILL wakes up every hour or more to be nursed. If I let him cry it out, he will do so until dawn. Believe me, I've tried.
My mother is fond of reminding me that I did not sleep through the night until I was FOUR. (My father concurred, when they were still speaking to each other).
I have heard this saying many times myself, and have since drawn the conclusion that the sick bastard responsible for its widespread circulation should be dragged into the street, stoned to death, and urinated on.

I just got an e-mail today that had a list of questions and tha was one of um! Its just cause once the babys are asleep they sleep good thats all it means!

Those people don't have babies.
Just kidding. When babies do sleep, they sleep deep. Maybe that's why.
