BEFORE I PROCEED, YOU SHOULD NEVER PUT PETROL STAINED CLOTHES DIRECTLY IN A TUMBLE DRYER!!! THE FUMES CAN SPARK A FIRE IN THE DRYER.
Petrol is oil-based so you need to wash the item with another oil-based substance to get the petrol out. Any kind of degreaser detergent will work, but the best is Orange Clean Pro, which I have only ever seen in the States. You can buy it online at: http://www.shoplet.com/office/db/OGL16194.html or at the American www.amazon.com.
A UK based company that does orange-based degreasers is www.mykal.co.uk, and you can find their consumer products at http://sites.stocksphere.com/mykal/ . Also try www.orangeglo.com!

Hope that helps!

Costco has the best degreaser ever. The smell is from oils.
Spray the item, then soak it in soapy water...in a bucket not your washer. ( did you know a washer can catch on fire if you put flamable things in it.) After it soaks for a day or two, then wash it, use a little bleach with the soap , let the water run full before adding the item. It should come out okay.

I clean houses and do laundry for this farmer. Sometimes he spills diesel fuel on his clothing. I washed his and it still smelled bad. So I found something stronger then diesel fuel, Pine sol. I washed the clothes with the Pine sol then rewashed them again with regular laundry soap and used fabric softener. Good Luck!
