Do guinea pigs lose their hair for the winter? Not LOSE it, but well..

My Peruvian long haired guinea pig's hair is getting wayy shorter. its winter where i am. he lives with his son who is only like 2 months old and they dont fight. Elvis, the one who' s losing hair, is a little under a year old.HELP!!!!?

They don't have mites. My guinea pigs are kept in clean big areas indoors. In my room, in fact. Besides, Elvis doesn't have big patches of fur missing. It's just getting shorter.

If you're talking about the hair appearing shorter but not falling out completely, I would suspect that you have a "barbering" issue. Elvis might be chewing his own hair or maybe his son is practicing for his cosmetology license. Either way, unless you take your pigs to shows, it's not really a big deal. I would recommend this site for info on barbering and a lot of other cavy stuff ---

If you have missing patches of fur, you more than likely have mites. you will need to see a veterinarian to get ivermectrin, this will clear up the mites, mites if left on treated will continue to get worse, and they will continue to scratch which will cause open sore, as the scratch the sore they will get larger and larger and they will get a secondary infection. We see this all the time; with owner turn-ins and animal cruelty cases that come in to our rescue,

mine always shedded a lot before winter, and in spring time. possiably this is what is going on with yours. i loved my peruvian he was one of my greatest pets! but yeah, mine used to shed a lot

yes but not heavily it still gets on your clothes you cant really tell visiblly if they shed
