Dumb Superhero fan question?

Question

Does Superman grow facial hair? If he does, does he have to pluck his facial hair since razors would break?

I don't entirely agree with the above: it has long been established, at least in the pre-Crisis multiverse, that Superman's hair & nails do NOT grow under a yellow sun.

Yes, he has been shown to have burnt them short with his heat vision, but to my memory, that has always been when they've grown while he was power-less for some reason; either affected by magic or Red Kryptonite, or having resided in another dimension or on a red-sun planet, visiting the bottle city of Kandor or something of the ilk.

Of course, any Kryptonian or other red-sun planet origin suitable implement would also do the trick.


(Sideways: for the BEST Superman story you could ever hope to read, check out Alan Moore's "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" I just read it again today & it's still as powerful & affecting as it was twenty years ago. The only major subject it never tackles is The Superman Revenge Squad...Kandor is mentioned as an aside & Red Kryptonite is implicit in the presence of Blue & Gold K and the presence of the Kryptonite Man, formerly the Kryptonite Kid. It even, against all odds, has a happy ending, thank goodness.)

Good question. And if I may add, who gives him a haircut? Actually Superman does grow facial hair, as seen in an episode of the animated series by WB. In that episode he goes to an alternate future (or dimension, I don't remember) where he has lost some of his powers like flight or super-strength, and has to struggle for survival. In order to look somewhat tired he is shown with some beard like he hadn't had a shave for a week. I guess Jor-El should have put a pair of "made in Krypton" scissors in the shuttle...

Good question, I think because no one put that into there heads while they were creating superman, i think superman always had facial hair, you know, hairy faced babies fits supermans id pretty well

yes he does, in the movie were lex turns superman evil, I beleive he gets some stubble.

i would imagine that his hair is not as strong as his skin, because he does get haircuts as clark kent. so i would say tht a normal razor should do it. otherwise he would be a long haired hippie if he could not get it cut since birth. and he was bald as a baby, and is not now, so i would assume his hair grows......

i saw the answer to that recently on Boomerang:

yes superman gets facial hair (he grew a full mustache and beard when sucked into an apocalyptic world ruled by vandal savage in JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED)

he shaves by bouncing his heat vision off a mirror or shiny metal (SUPERMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES)

In the six issue miniseries by John Byrne in 1986, Superman explains how he shaves. He does indeed use his heat vision and bounces it off a mirror.

He does in fact grow facial hair. In one of the movies he goes on a drunken bender and you see it. He could shave with his fingernails or something. As stan lee says "It's a superhero secret."

DC comics actually answered this questions decades ago when a bunch of Supe's fans asked.

According to what they printed at the time Supes uses his Heat Vision and a mirror (I guess) to burn away any unwanted hair.

He also has the Fortress of Solitude which has advance alien tech.

Superman uses metals the blew into space when Krypton exploded to create his personal hygenie instruments.

Yeah, he would have to. When Lana turned evil, even she tried to cut off his hair with some big scissors and the scissors broke! The scissors were big, hard, and strong too! 0_0
